New motor selection

Post by dcarroll1002 »

I will be getting another ride on or 2 in the near future and i was just wondering... if i decide to change the engine out for a higher voltage/ faster one... what specs should i be looking at to compare for mounting purposes... im new to this so take it easy on me lol!

EDIT: Also what should i look to upgrade for speed increase?

What is the best price you've found on these, and from where? I'm interested in getting some too.

I found those too and I put 4 in the cart to see how much shipping would be and it wouldn't let me checkout. I finally figured out they only have 1 in stock. That one with shipping was under $!5.

Buy them from here, I think they are the cheapest at $11.97:

I run these motors on 18v with no problem at all, with a lot of heavy driving. My 4 year old even pulled our 2 year old on a sled with the F150.

Do these motors run faster on 18v than the stock ones.
And if not do they take 24v.

Of course! I would say these motors on 12v are almost as fast as stock on 18v. So HPI's on 18v are wicked fast!

what do you recommend :
scooter controller with stock motors on 24V. could use mf gb's and motors to.
or just put hpi's in at 18v.

Also should I stick with a ninja which I have loads of spares for, including several mf gb's

Or go with a raptor, I have 2 complete units.

My son loves our Ninja with the twist high speed throttle. That thing flies on 18v with the HPI motors.

I totally suggest doing the 18v with HPI, price is reasonable (wife didn't kill me), and it works awesome.

Ok lets take this one step further.
Is there a 700 series version of the hpi 550gt motor that I could use on the MF GB's.
Reason I ask is that I've had the 7s gearboxes start to melt the first gear on it's shaft. I figure the MF GB's would take more punishment.

Do not try and use the stock pinions, I don't think it is even possible. The HPI motors have a flat side so that a set screw in the new pinion will make contact with the flat section and keep the pinion nice and secure. I just picked up new pinions from the local hobby shop. Be sure to get the proper pitch pinion based on the gearbox you have in your PW. If you are not sure remove one of the motors and count the number of teeth on the stock pinion. I did buy one pair of motors from them. The pair for our KFX I wanted to buy right away and my local hobby shop had them on hand for a reasonable price (but more).

I ordered my HPI 550s from my local hobby shop. After shipping charges from cheaper online stores is factored in the price is within a few dollars, I figured it better to support my local shop. I plan on running 12v for a while but I also ordered some heat sink fan combos from Hobby King that I wanted to share TURNIGY Heat Sink with Fan for 36 series motors. One of the comments says they run off of 6v so you would have to figure out a power source like the others out there. I have a couple small fans from junked computer mother boards that run off 12v I want to try on these.

I do not have any fans on mine, I have been fine. The HPI GT550's do have internal fans built into the motors, but I am sure it would cool things down a bit if you had fans to circulate the air around the motors.

Titan 775 is a different size and the Titans have "reverse rotation". So if you were to get the Titan 21 Turns, you would need to get one with reverse rotation and one without.

32 Pitch is normal, but I have never seen 8 tooth. I think 12 is the lowest I have seen on the Jeep Hurricane.

here is the raptor pinion thread I started. 8 tooth pinions.

I bought a hpi550gt motor today and ordered another.
bought a pinion puller to.

Still not sure about the pinions though. the pinions at the hobby store were pretty narrow, will that wear faster on the plastic gears in the GB's.

I may try to drill the pw's pinions and thread a lock screw into them.
