Traction
I think this should be in this catagory. A while back, FIXN-IT turned me on to a traction solution he had. Timing Belts. I am putting them on a lil F150 that my daughter just had to have and I will see how it works. They are about 1.5in wide and are made not to stretch. You can probably go to you local garage or dealership and ask them to keep the ones they replace in services (read FREE). I just wrapped these around the wheels like they were Bmx tires and used drywall screws to attach them. I will upload pics when the rain gives me 90 seconds. Credit goes to FIXN-IT though. I think they will work great.
If it ain't modified, It ain't much fun!

Re: Traction
with something like this do you predrill the holes?? last time i tried running screws into the center of a wheel it split on the first hard bump  so i gave up on narrow traction bands

Re: Traction
I dont know what will happen VW. Im thinking that the small hole of the drywall screws will do better with no drilling. I wouldnt do this on a peg wheel though. I think they are too thin in my experience. I just hit the meat of the wheel with the screw and run it till it stopped.

Re: Traction
thanks for the pics that answered my question right off .. my mistake was putting the screws dead center  .. you have them offset away from where the wheel is sealed in the center
had i thought of that my first modded PWs wouldnt have been thrown away but HEY i was only 9 years old

Re: Traction
Will you do anything to the front?
Perhaps a Serpentine belt ribbed side out for lateral traction?
Is this off-road only or will you be using it on pavement as well?

Re: Traction
The front I wont mess with unless the tires "push" with the added traction. This will be a gravel, grass and good ole georgia red clay vehicle.

Re: Traction
Red clay totally explains the need for traction. Please post with how the gearboxes hold up . 99% of our ride time is in grass with some light coverage (leaves/pinestraw). We have one supersix truck we bought with some hex head bolts already installed in the rear tires but we haven't pushed the voltage up yet. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Traction
Im hoping she will be testing it by Christmas. I threaded the axles before I reinstall it so GB changes wont be an issue. Im thinking that on 6v they would do well. On 12v, I expect them to frag. I have 20 or so #3 GBs so I dont care if she occasionally turns one loose but if it becomes a daily habit, we may have to change back.

Re: Traction
While waiting on the weather to cooperate with paint, I was doing some research on traction in the forum and found Melonman's Snow Cat. I added the link for those that hadnt seen it.

Re: Traction
The truck is finally assembled. After I get home today, we're gonna take it for a spin (but Im hoping for no spin) and see what happens. We gave it a little test run in the indoor, winter, workshop and it just goes with zero wheel spin. Since carpet wasnt an issue, we'll see how the mud from our 5 days of rain does with the traction devices. If this works well, it will be added to the mustang next since all it does is spin. Kinda reminds me of my s-10 blazer with the 400 small block. You didnt drive it in the rain at all.

Re: Traction
had a 1979 impala like that ..... started to wonder if the 327 and 5speed from a mangled vette was a good idea when winter hit LOL
soooo what is the easiest to get cheapest traction mod so far???
the eliminator spends a bit too much time spinning and thinking asif trying to deside weather or not it really wants to move
the smaller wheels on the rear dont really move it at all with a 45LB load and the stock 12V (tested with weights in the newly improvised shop) LOL
is it normal for them to spin on linoleum (<---never could spell that one)

Re: Traction
Test drive was a success. Traction is incredible. Now for the bad news.....the #3 gearboxes wont hold up long. Im thinking that Taz's #3 GB fix will take care of it. Im not posting the video to Youtube but I will post it to FB and link it here as soon as FB gets done processing it.

One of the other major benefits I found was that it stopped much faster. There is a downside to this too in that the brakes will surely destroy the GBs faster. Im thinking that this would be better suited for #7 GBs but I havent ever put them in a Lil F150. Not to say I wont but just havent.

Re: Traction
Update...After 2.5 days of riding, there has been no failures. The GBs only make noise when she is in a severe bind or feathers the throttle. Yesterday, she went up a leaf, pinestraw and mulch covered area down the road and it climbed it with no issues.
If I can get some more soon, I will add them to the Rhino. I filled the Rhino wheels with foam so that they weren't as flimsy.
I think this mod is alot easier and quicker than the bmx tire mod. I had these on in less than 10 mins for both. The only thing I had to cut was the timing belt so that was easier than cutting the sidewall out of the bmx tire.

Re: Traction
On the second day of riding, I noticed that the front did "push" when she was in wet leaves. It never got stuck the entire time though. On gravel, it made her turning radius about the same as normal. I think that it I added a belt, like a serpentine, to the front and she made a high speed turn, she may turn over. Stopping is alot faster with this mod than without.Gacknar wrote:Will you do anything to the front?

Is this off-road only or will you be using it on pavement as well?

Re: Traction
I got a Brute Force to repair the other day and the rear tires were pretty thin in spots. The customer didnt want to replace them since it was old but needed something. The tires are too wide for the timing belts so what was I going to do.
I saw that my son the scrapper was taking tires off of old mowers becase they had bad tires but good wheels. So I got the old rear tires
I cut the sidewall out with a box cutter as they arent very thick. Then I cut the 7 inch wide center section into 2, 3 inch wide strips using metal shears
They were more than long enough to go around those tall Brute Force wheels with about 5 inches to spare. I gave them a quick coat of Gorilla glue and then screwed them into the knob sections of the tire using #6x1" drywall screws
Not too shabby. They were on from start to finish, including the time it took to cut them out, in about an hour. They work great and now it really has monster traction. If it ain't modified, It ain't much fun!

Re: Traction
Well it was asked early on but it hadnt been an issue till about 1800 this evening. My daughter took the new and improved 150 for a test drive. Even with weight added to the front end, it has a bad push. Little Maniac refused to let out of the throttle when it wouldnt turn and hit a steel rack at WOT. Bumper took alot of impact as did her mouth. She was wearing a seatbelt and had on a bicycle helmet since her neck roll isnt here yet for the other helmet. Face first into the steering wheel at XX MPH. Blood, swelling and tears followed. Tomorrow Im adding traction to the front but a roll cage wouldnt be bad either
