MARIO KART aka- Rally Racer COMPLETE

Post by gwinnythepooh »

SO on to my second driveway racer, had so much fun doing Francesco- this one moved up in line. 8-)

So here is what I started with. A Rally Racer in pretty good condition for $25. had a broken motor lead... fairly easy fix.
Image

Busted right off, a common problem with these because of the low vibration
Image
Image

Soldered new wires (ok, so really Scotty5 had to rescue me on this one and he did it) and we were good to go!
Image

Here is how the car has sat for the last 6 months. In pieces. The actual car is in my closet. LOL
Image

And Today they jumped in the tub! Tomorrow I'll start sanding, etc. I hope to have paint finished by this weekend!
Image

and here's what I am shooting for!!!

Today's Progress:
Everything got scrubbed. The decals are a nightmare to get off. Heat gun not helping, almost making it worse.

Got the White parts that need striped and black parts painted today and the engine chromed.

I found that laquer thinner and a scotch brite pad work wonders in stubborn decals. They are a must for Hummer older paper decals found on the yellow on. I have still not convinced my wife to let me use the tub or dishwasher for PW parts.

Darn. Lol I use both. Works great... Should have seen my tub after parts got out. But then again I'm the one who goes back and cleans everything with bleach.

About every other day I find slot machine parts in my dishwasher (husbands hobby) so we're even.

So progress being made... Got decals today. Don't even WANT to say what the guy charged me... Its was a nightmare.
I don't know what all the weird shadows and highlighting are in my pics, everything looks good and normal. LOL

Image

I still have some touch up to do on the checkers
Image

Again, FROG TAPE is awesome!! No bleed through and no touch up needed! And never lifts the color underneath, and I stripe less than 24 hours after original color.

This is coming out sick, Gwinny! (And fast, I need to get motivated!) Are the checkers a decal or are you painting them on with a brush?? They look great in the picture, but I can sympathize with your perfectionist eye, lol! Definitely a great and fun idea for a build, I can't wait to see this assembled!

Its honestly a sad story.
stupid me... I painted the whole wing white, and then frog taped criss cross. Wasn't thinking... So only every other square that was supposed to be black turned out black. Woops! So then I had to go back and hand paint all the squares... .UGH! Oh well, its turning out fine. I think it gives it a little character.

I also got wheels painted tonight but didn't take pics.

too funny about the checkers. The things that seem so logical sometimes are just not. So now everything else being pretty equal, which cart gets the best battery huh.

I really like what you did with your Rally Racer... my 5 yr old son loves to drive his car; but the front wheels are falling apart... since you look like you know a lot about these karts would you happen to know where a dad can find a new set of tires for the car... any help would be much appreciated.

Good luck with the move.....don't let the movers touch the toys! (wouldn't want any scratches ;) )

Really nice work. I picked up two of these recently myself and plan to paint them.

What paint do you like to use? Also for deep scratches, is there a filler you use to fill the voids?

I use Rustoleum 2X with the primer. Deep scratches are hard, I use bondo but honestly it chips off and breaks...you may be better off sanding down as much as you can and then just leaving it. If you are talking about the bottom bumpers- just leave them, they will get all scratched again...

Just be EXTRA sure you don't turn on the drying heat.
Had a friend who swore by dishwasher cleaning his pinball plastic parts. He was washing an extremely valuable ramp set from a WhiteWater pin once and forgot to turn off the heat. It badly warped everything and he had the privilege of spending almost $400 for more ramps.
