dozer's Raptor HPI 550 GT's 18volts 233
dozer's Raptor HPI 550 GT's 18volts
Ok got it into the basement today and pulled it apart.
Going to use HPI 550 GT motors. Waiting for a second motor to come in.
I used these threads for info regarding motors and pinions.
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=660
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=759
The question is now can I even use the HPI motors. The raptor pinions are 32 pitch (at least they mesh with a PW's 19t pinion) Or is there an 8 tooth 32p pinion with lock screw available.
Can the stock raptor pinions be pressed on to the HPI motor. The shaft on the HPI motor is also short. can the pinion stick out the end.

I'm going to have to get a pinion puller now! ;)
Re: dozer's Raptor
This website doesn't have a price but at least we know these are available with a set screw!! We just need to figure out if the length will be ok.

Here's one that says it's 15mm long. Would that work? this one has a collar though, the other one is splined the whole length.

Re: dozer's Raptor
yup it's small.
Not enough metal to drill and tap for a set screw.
Length is 17mm.
I don't mean any offence but I'm surprised you guys are using mm's. I thought Americans resisted the metric system.
Does anyone know how to take these GB's apart. The metal plates seem to be pressed on to the silver shafts ( see arrows).
I was going to take it apart and take pics for the FAQ gearbox section.
And thanks for the research guys. I sent the first link to the hobby shop I bought the motor at. The young guy there looked at me like I had 2 heads when I said 8t pinion.
In the first pic it kinda looks like the teeth on the 8t pinion get thick at the right end.
It's just the picture,(see the third pic) those teeth are cut all the way along.

I think it's absurd that we haven't moved to the Metric system yet. :roll:dozer wrote: I don't mean any offence but I'm surprised you guys are using mm's. I thought Americans resisted the metric system.
Fractions and units of twelve are ridiculously cumbersome to deal with, especially since almost everything has to be 'translated' to/from Metric anyway. :x
Heck, I'd be game for time measurements based in ten also (10 hours/day, 100 minutes/hour, 100 seconds/minute?). :)
'Protection' and 'Oppression' are synonymous.

So they must teach the metric system in school there.
Now I'm open to correction but the metic system is totally based on water right.
a kilo of water at a certain temp(?) measures 10cm by 10cm by 10cm and that's a liter.

Re: dozer's Raptor
I have no issue with moving to metric system. They talked about it for ever. The 2 liter Soda being the first attempt. When I was kid in school they said when I was 30 we would be on it. Well sorry they missed that one. As long as their are old people still alive that use the standard system I don't see it ever going away. When the USA is no longer a super power which could be in my lifetime well that could be the end of it then.

Re: dozer's Raptor
I have a buddy who works for the largest engineering firm in the world - an international corporation, with offices in every major country. He's a lead designer, which is one step below an engineer, and I've pressed him for some sort of justification for our use of the 'standard' system, and he has nothing. The last time this came up, was when he was describing some design work he was doing on a super tanker (redesigning staff quarters). Since the ship was built in Asia (S. Korea I think), all of the original blueprints are Metric, so they converted everything to standard, added their design changes, and converted it all back to Metric to order the foreign materials, and keep the blueprints consistent. :?
I also helped him add 1200 sq. ft. onto his house a few years ago (for two and a half years :| ). For the more complex calculations, I converted from standard to metric, then back to standard for our final measurements/cuts. He carries an expensive HP scientific calculator with him at all times, because of it's ability to calculate fractions and '12' based units. By converting to Metric, manually calculating, and converting back, I was still able to make most calculations quicker, and more accurately than he could using the calculator with standard values. :)
I just don't get it. :?

neither do I eh ;)
I'm unusually fluent in both.
Woodshop teacher in high school said the class the year before mine didn't know metric very well.
and the class the year after didn't know imperial very well.
My wife is 7 1/2 years younger than me, ask her how tall she is and she'll ansewer in cm's.
Do you guy's remember junk yard wars.
I still remember the american guy asking if they had an american mearsuring tape.

There is a longer version of that one available and John at AH is going to find out how long they are.
The stock 17 mm almost touches the other side of the gearbox but the shaft is not pressed on all the way.
so I think can get it a little long.
I'd rather have the metal pinion touching as much of the plastic gear as possible.
Anyone got any info on taking apart these gearboxes.

Re: dozer's Raptor
been searching the old site for raptor info. Not a lot of info on the GB's. 1 guy said he got the one with the plates apart but didn't say how.
http://www.modifiedpowerwheels.com/foru ... rms=raptor
Anyone notice that the search function on the old site works much better now.
The raptor I have has 650 motors in it. longer than a 550 but the same diameter.
HPI 550 gt motors are still a good replacement right? I'll ask again before maybe attempting to take them apart, anyone get the raptor GB's apart without breaking them.

weird...and only one post. Haven't noticed a difference with the search but I can't log into my account for some reason. :(
Re: dozer's Raptor
Oh there was a bunch of stuff on the raptor. a lot of questions on GB's and motors. but a lot of different ansewers due to the checkered history of the raptor.
I tried to press the pin out of the gearbox using a bench vise as a press but the pin didn't budge, or at least I applied as much presure as I dared . So I'll fall back on the saying that if it ain't broke don't fix it.
I'll put a little more grease in through the pinion hole and use it till it blows.

Re: dozer's Raptor
In the meantime, you may want to search for "pinion puller" on YouTube. There are a few decent videos on there for smaller electric motors.modmom32 wrote:would someone post how to do a pinion pulling video already? More importantly, he didn't say if he got them back together... :lol:dozer wrote:been searching the old site for raptor info. Not a lot of info on the GB's. 1 guy said he got the one with the plates apart but didn't say how.

Re: dozer's Raptor
It looks like I burnt up one motor on my Raptor. Have we determined yet if the GT550 motor will work with a replacement pinion? I'm gonna have to take mine apart now too.

I've ordered 2 of these. but the long version x-0214 http://www.rc4wdealer.com/2/index.php?m ... cts_id=516witz07 wrote:It looks like I burnt up one motor on my Raptor. Have we determined yet if the GT550 motor will work with a replacement pinion? I'm gonna have to take mine apart now too.
Should be in this week. I'll let you know how it goes. The stock pinions just slid on and off the HPI's
But take note, it says that "this is the shorter version of x-0216."
x-0216 is a 7 tooth pinion. I figured that out by accident just in time.
The manufacturer did not ansewer the hobby shops request for a length.
I wanted the longest one that will fit to keep the most contact with the plastic gears.
The stock pinion almost rubs the other side of the GB. So I ordered the longest one possible. If it's too long I'll grind it to length. I'll have to grind slowly to keep it cool so as not to damage the temper.

Re: dozer's Raptor
After using the piion puller I bought from the hobby store I've decided that this is a case where you need the right tool for the job. Try and find one at a hobby store or Chozian found one pretty quick on ebay.modmom32 wrote:would someone post how to do a pinion pulling video already? Hey Cho could you post a pic of yours.
I was going to build one with some blocks of wood and a steel plate that I could put in a bench vise and use vice as a press. But never got to it.
For the price of the puller, the pullers worth it.

Re: dozer's Raptor
I received it in the mail today. After taking a look at it, I found out that it is made for smaller electric motors. The opening that goes around the pinion is only 2.5mm wide. I can easily fix that by grinding it down just a little. Though, it still won't work on pinions that are too wide or tall. Here is a pic.dozer wrote:After using the piion puller I bought from the hobby store I've decided that this is a case where you need the right tool for the job. Re: dozer's Raptor
Yeah, I like dozers....where'd ya get it?
Re: dozer's Raptor
Just picked up four of these on k-bid for $15 bucks. One is complete and in working order #2 was missing the foot pedal but got one off of one of the other ones. #3 is missing shifter seat foot pedal #4 is missing handle bars shifter foot pedal seat and bat indicator. I would like to get a seat, shifter and foot pedal so I can get the third one up and running. If anyone has parts let me know. Thanks.

Re: dozer's Raptor
Also do any of you know about the gear shifters on the raptor? #2 only works in hi gear. I have not checked it out yet. Just put a bat in it to see if it worked and it did only in hi gear. Sorry dozer maybe I should start my own thread but if you need gear box parts #4 is all for parts.

Re: dozer's Raptor
hanging on the wall at the hobby store. I thik it's meant for pulling pinion with set screws that get stuck after the set screw is removed. I still had to put a pair of pliers on mine to get the pressed on pinion to move. pressed on pinions can be put back on using a bench vice and a socket (if the shaft sticks out the end).Kstorm21 wrote:Yeah, I like dozers....where'd ya get it?

Re: dozer's Raptor
Sawblade, not sure if you know about this site but I'll post it for ya. It has replacement parts (shipping is kind of crazy) but it also has trouble shooting videos on some of the replacement parts page. It should help you figure out why it only goes in high gear. Probably the switch.

Re: dozer's Raptor
Yeah I do thanks Kstorm. I started on the old site a year ago but had to take little brake because of personal reasons but back now and stronger then ever. I cleaned the hi low switch and it worked fine. #2 is up and running. Dug into the rest of the pile of raptors today. #3 has a gear box or motor problem one side. So now i will need foot pedal, shifter, motor or gear box and seat to get that one going. #4 is for parts have problems with both gearboxes or motors on that one . Need to dig in a little deeper to see if it is motors or gear boxes. Thanks again for your help Kstorm and info for that site. That was a big help. :D
