I know the No.7 and 7R pinions look similar besides the stamp but they are not swappable. The 1st gear will be destroyed if you try to mix up the No.7 and No.7R pinions

My thought is to remove all that stuff and connect the red wire right to the motor tab. I suspect it is some type of thermal switch that went bad and somebody tried to bypass it

A battery, even if new, can be permanently damaged if not properly charged between uses or run down too low. Running the battery until the vehicle comes to a stop is bad for battery longevity. As soon as it noticeably slows down pull the kid off or swap the battery

Don't go with bulbs - they draw too much power and create too much heat
